About the region
Administrative centre of the region is Chita, with population of 339 thousand persons. In 18 km from the capital of Transbaikal, there is an international airport; it is one of the most dynamic Russian and European airports in the subcategory of “small” airports (up to 5 mln. passengers per year) according to the data of ACI Europe (Airport Council International) rating. In 2014 reconstruction of internal air lines’ terminal was completed.
Transbaikal is rich with mineral resources. Resources of the region include the following: 94% of assured reserves of uranium of the Russian Federation, 36% - of fluorspar, 37.2% - of zirconium, 23.8% - of copper, 30.5% - of molybdenum, 22.7% - of titanium, 14.4% - of silver, 8.5% - of plumbum, 7% - of gold, besides there are reserves of tungsten, stannum, lithium, zinc and iron ore. 23 industrial coal fields and several dozens of coal exposures, with total reserve of 6.9 bln. ton, were found at the territory of Transbaikal. Apsatskoe and Chitkandinskoe coal fields have high gas content: total reserves of methane in coal beds reach 63-65 bln. sq. m. Significant reserves of wood (territory of forests is 30 bln. ha) are concentrated in the region.
The most important place in the structure of industrial production is taken by the extraction of commercial minerals (51.2%); manufacturing activity takes 19.7%, distribution of electric energy, gas and water - 29.1%. Bitumen coal, sawn timber, processed metals and products from them are exported from the region to Korean Republic and Japan. Duration of the railway roads of the region is 2.4 thousand km. Railway system is represented by Transbaikal part of Trans-Siberian line and Baikal-Amur Mainline. A range of large-scale infrastructural projects is being realized at the territory of Transbaikal as a part of formation of new industrial productions.
